First Prize Winner: Carol P., Plymouth, MA

I try to recycle, re-use in all the small ways that I can. I recycle glass, plastic, paper, cardboard, everything that is possible to recycle in my town. I use a rain barrel to collect water for my yard. My water bottle is steel, filled from the faucet. I do a lot of my clothes shopping at second hand stores, where I actually find much more fun and interesting clothing. I also donate as much as possible.

In my yard I am slowly getting rid of the lawn, and replacing it with as many native plants as I can, trying to create a Wildlife Habitat. I use plants that are food sources, thickets and scrub for hiding, and a natural appearing water feature. Using native plants decreases my use of water. To enrich my soil, I compost all my kitchen scraps and yard waste. My next step is to create a worm farm for even better compost.

In my home, the thermostat is on a timer with the highest temperature set at 65 degrees. I have replaced all incandescent light bulbs with CFLs. I have a new energy efficient furnace and new energy efficient dishwasher and refrigerator.

None of these are great steps but they all help the environment and I find it fun to try all that I can to make the world a better and safer place.
